MODE OF ACTION AND HYDROLYSIS
Velcorin® (Dimethyl Dicarbonate, DMDC, E242) as a liquid is added during the production of the beverage via our dosing technology. Velcorin® penetrates the cell and deactivates enzymes, leading to the destruction of the microorganisms. Once added, it rapidly breaks down into negligible amounts of methanol and carbon dioxide, naturally occurring compounds in many beverages such as fruit and vegetable juices and wines. Consequently, it has no effect on the taste, smell or color of the beverage.
Even at low concentrations, Velcorin® is highly effective against typical microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria and mold.
VELCORIN® TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION
his flexible cold-fill technology can enable cost and energy efficient production by eliminating the need for energy intensive thermal treatment and extend shelf-life in chilled chain distribution. Besides the energy saving opportunities, significantly lower or even no maintenance costs and limited manufacturing footprint are further key benefits of the technology. As Velcorin® is added to the product just before filling, there are no limitations in terms of packaging materials because it is compatible with all of them.
Prominent bodies, such as the EU Scientific Committee on Food, the FDA in the United States and the JECFA of the WHO, have all confirmed the safe use of dimethyl dicarbonate in the beverage industry. The production of Velcorin® is certified according to ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2005 and FSSC 22000. Velcorin® is also certified to meet Halal & Kosher requirements.
